The 95th Legislative Session will run from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010.
Each legislative session lasts for two years. During that time, bills are introduced, debated in committee, and discussed on the floor of each chamber. Of the many bills that are introduced every session, only a few are actually taken up by the Legislature. A small number of them are passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate and signed by the Governor to become Michigan law. At the end of the two-year session, all the legislation that had been introduced but not yet signed into law, becomes invalid. All the ideas will have to be re-introduced as legislation by the new legislature.
Public Acts are listed first (those bills that have been signed into law), followed by bills that have had some action by the legislature including where each bill is in the process toward becoming Michigan law. That list is followed by introduced legislation from the House and Senate that has not yet been taken up by a committee.
You may access the links from here or the Bill Status Page.
We have listed bills from the current legislative session that are important to children and families in Michigan. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list, but can be informative in looking at the priorities of the current Michigan Legislature. Bills are arranged numerically by subject category. Since these areas of children's lives are often inter-connected, bills may be listed in more than one section.
By clicking on the Bill number, you can find out the sponsor of the legislation, its date of introduction, the most recent version of the bill (including any amendments or substitutions), and any activity that has been taken on the bill (has it been taken up by a committee, has it been passed by one or both of the chambers). You can also view the text of the bill itself, and legislative analyses where available.
We are using the following abbreviations throughout this section:
Please give us feedback about this page! We are interested in your ideas about other legislation we should highlight, and additional interpretation of the bills that we have described. Contact Michele Corey with your comments.
