Public Act 377 (HB 5341) Overbeck Law was signed into law December 2008 and became effective in March of 2009. The law requires the installation of carbon monoxide detectors in any new construction or remodeling on a home or hotel in Michigan. The Overbecks died in 2003 in their brand new home when they mistakenly left their car running in their garage.
This is critically important legislation that will not only save lives, but will help thousands of children who are unknowingly being chronically poisoned by faulty (sometimes new) furnaces, gas stoves, and other appliances. The symptoms include headache, nausea, lethargy, and dizziness, all easily misdiagnosed or ignored, and all decreasing a child's ability to learn. It only takes 15 minutes to die of carbon monoxide poisoning.
FIrst Alert is working with the Overbeck Fund and the Registered Nurses Association in Michigan (RN-AIM) to distribute free or discounted CO alarms to families served by selected health departments in Michigan. For more information, contact the Overbeck Fund at www.overbeckfoundation.org.
