What's Happening in Michigan

Upcoming trainings

The Promise of Michigan's Children is working with partners in four Michigan communities to present advocacy training sessions on three key issues before Congress this year.  These free half-day workshops are focused on strengthening your organization’s advocacy skills and providing you with the latest information on how you can impact pending federal legislation crucial to the health and well-being of Michigan’s children and families.

Join David Laird, Government Affairs Associate with Voices for America’s Children in Washington D.C., along with local nonprofit advocacy and public policy experts as we explore how you can make a difference on these issues:

  • Reauthorization of the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) — The main source of child abuse prevention funding in the United States at approximately $100 million annually, including more than $3 million for Michigan in 2007, to support state programs and independent organizations.
  • Reauthorization of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA) — The main source of juvenile justice funding for states and communities, providing $700 million a year, including $2.6 million for Michigan expected in 2009, to support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention programs, juvenile justice system improvements, and offender reentry programs.
  • Debate over the proposed Education Begins at Home Act (EBAH) — Proposed legislation to provide $500 million over three years to states, including up to $13.7 million for Michigan, to support evidence-based home visiting programs proven to prevent child abuse and neglect and reduce crime and violence.
